The Priest Assistant writes 7/23/08 PDF Print E-mail
In Father Bill’s absence -  the Priest Assistant writes... "Summer time, and the livin' is easy, The fish are jumpin' And the garden is fine!" Taking liberties with George Gershwin's lyrics, because we are in the midst of summer and our flower garden is fine at 375 Arthur Avenue, where I spend most of my time during these months. One thing I am aware of is that if "the garden is fine" it doesn't get that way without the help of God and man.  And sometimes man does fall down on the job - like not watering, or feeding, or weeding, or whatever. A Pastor (whether assistant or "head man in charge") has similar responsibilities. And thank goodness people can and do take care of themselves. But there are times when there are spiritual needs, and often these are supplied by the Pastor - the Gardener, who stands in for the Chief Gardener. In my years as a priest – and it comes to 53 now - I have had the care of many "Gardens", and I have found comfort and joy in  bringing comfort to others -  in providing the sacraments, or giving counsel, or just by being present. So when the Rector goes away on vacation I like to assure the people of St. Matthias that I am available at any time.  Don't hesitate to call at home (868-7862) or on my cell phone(423-7351). My home address is as above, where our flower garden is. And don't hesitate to fuss me if you feel I neglect you. Our flowers always let me know when I neglect them! Have a nice summer! Father Ben
