Vacation Bible School started this past Monday
and that made me think of the days I spent in Vacation Bible School when I was young. My sister and I really did not have a choice about going. The lady who ran it for our church was also the superintendent of the Harvey County Schools and she lived just west of town on a farm. She had to go by our house to get to the Church and she made it a point to stop and pick us up everyday. I think maybe she had the best hand as she and her husband’s farm had a creek running through it and as long as I went to Bible School I was allowed to fish on Emma Creek. The fishing was not that good but in Kansas there are not too many places you can drown a worm. I spent many a summer day on the banks of Emma Creek and Mrs. Royer would even bring me a lunch sometimes. I would always share my catch with them and I would even clean them first before I gave them the fish. Mr. Royer would throw my bike in the back of his pick up and drive me the four miles back to town. I was never sure if he was being nice or just keeping me from stealing a watermelon from his patch on my way to town. They did not have any children and I guess I filled that need for them. I could not have been treated any better and because of that there were times when I didn’t catch a lot a fish that I cleaned and gave them all to the Royers. I look back on that now and realize that I was in training on how to be part of a Church family and many of the things they taught me are still valid today. These people were 50 years my senior and yet we enjoyed each other and looked forward of our time together. Church family has no social boundaries, no age limits, no economic boundaries. It has only one thing in common and that is the love of the Lord. I am not sure that was what they were teaching in Bible School but I did learn something. Herb |
