To be an acolyte is something very special. It takes someone who is committed to their church as a member and dedicated to being on time and willing to serve when they are needed. Being early and available is a commendable virtue and acolytes must have it.

Acolytes are responsible for two assignments during the service: crucifers and torch-bearers. The crucifer is responsible for carrying the cross at the front of the processions and leading the procession during the service. The torch-bearer's job is to escort the cross into the church during the procession. Both of these positions require patience and reverence during the service. Only people of special aptitude can hold such a position.
